triple-alpha process (Salpeter process)

A nuclear fusion process that occurs in the interior of evolved stars. Three helium nuclei - also known as alpha particles - fuse to form carbon, with the release of gamma-ray energy. This can take place only when all the hydrogen in a stellar core has been used up and the temperature has risen to 100 million degrees.
